Industrial espionage at CES 2017 with stolen prototypes
At CES 2017, two Razer prototype laptops were stolen from the show floor, the company has confirmed.
Razer Project Valerie laptop prototypes were stolen from the firm’s press room at 4pm local time on Sunday, January 8th as the show came to a close. The company is offering a $25,000 reward for original information that leads to identification, arrest and conviction.
CEO Min-Liang Tan suggested the theft may have been “industrial espionage” and said the penalties for “such crimes” would be “grievous”.
The prototype laptop was one of the most eye-catching announcements of CES. Each has three 17.3″, 4K screens that slide out to create a giant, widescreen display.
In a statement issued to Gizmodo, the CTA, the organisation behind CES, said it was working with Razer and law enforcement on an investigation into the theft.
It added that security on-site was its “highest priority” and said that measures to combat theft included barring cleaning and maintenance staff from the show floor until an hour after CES closes to give companies “a chance to secure product”.
