Start-up Creates A Modular Smart Watch That You Can Design And Customize Yourself

It appears to be a totally normal smartwatch, but BLOCKS comes equipped with a strap made of several links  that have their own functions, allowing wearers to decide on the modules they want built into their watch.

Blocks’ creators wanted to create a smart device that wasn’t “one-size-fits-all,” but rather that could be totally customized by the wearer.

The company acknowledges that although a ton of sensors are embedded in a wearable device, space is always a limiting factor, so it decided to create add-on modules that are incorporated directly into the watch’s band.

The modules

Blocks allows you to build a smartwatch that suits your lifestyle, with features that are customized to your needs. So what kind of modules can you incorporate into your watch? For now the company is offering an extra battery module, heart rate module, GPS module, data-transfer module, and an adventurer module that gives temperature and altitude readings. The company will be rolling out additional module in phase two of production, including a SIM card, fingerprint module, LED module, and programmable modules. Down the road it plans to the incorporate a camera module, air quality module, flash memory, and stress levels module.

The watch itself will possess ordinary smart device capabilities like making phone calls, monitoring health, and calendars.

Blocks will be compatible with both iPhones and Android smartphones. It works with iOS 8 and above, on iPhone 4s and above. It also works with all Android 4.0+ phones including those from LG, Motorola, Sony, Samsung, HTC, Xiaomi and more.

Blocks’ London-based founders, skilled in product design, hardware, and software, have been working on the customizable smart watch since November 2013.  Now that it has finally been brought to life, the company launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise production funds.

As it turns out, Blocks was in pretty high demand as it has already doubled its $250,000 funding goal with 36 days remaining in its campaign.
