Hyundai Mobis Puts an Electric Motor Inside the Wheels

Hyundai Mobis is putting an electric motor inside a vehicle’s wheels, enhancing power efficiency by reducing components and providing independent control of all four wheels. The company calls the in-wheel system the future of mobility essential for an e-corner module providing zero turns and crab walking.

Hyundai announced it created the in-wheel system, including the in-house development of the drive motor and the controller. Hyundai is currently verifying reliability for mass production based on IONIQ 5 with Hyundai Motor Company.

The company started developing the system in 2010 in response to the emerging electric car market. In-wheel motors are based on a complex design process that places a powertrain on wheels. The technology’s challenges include securing the drive performance and durability.

Key features of the system include enhanced drive and power efficiency, longer cruising range, improved driving performance, and unique steer modes. The solution will maximize drive efficiency without installing a separate power transmission component, such as a drive shaft. This will also improve power efficiency and the driving range of electric vehicles with secured battery capacity. It frees up space, allowing the car to use the room for the existing driving system. Hyundai Mobis reports improved turn movement and power efficiency by approximately 20% or more through efficient torque distribution in all four directions.
