L!BER8 create world’s first high-fashion smart bracelet

Plastic Logic, a leader in the design and manufacture of glass-free electrophoretic displays (EPDs), has been selected by L!BER8, a wearable technology start-up, to produce the first ever low power, high-fashion smart bracelet called Tago Arc. Controlled by a smartphone app, the bracelet’s flexible E Ink display can be continually re-customized with different digital patterns to fit the user’s mood, clothes, other accessories, friends’ clothes and accessories – the possibilities are endless.

With over a decade of experience in developing and manufacturing glass-free displays, Plastic Logic’s cutting-edge technology met L!BER8’s requirement for a flexible, robust and long-lasting battery solution that will make Tago Arc a success. The unique feature of Targo Arc is that the display reaches end-to-end from the metal rims of the bracelet, so the entire surface displays the chosen pattern.

Plastic Logic’s flexible E Ink displays only require small amounts of power which means that the act of changing the image on the bracelet runs on a very low power design.

“Plastic Logic met and exceeded our expectations by offering great guidance and uncompromising support. The team really were as flexible as their displays. The idea of the bracelet was not to be a tech gadget but to be a premium fashion accessory and Plastic Logic provided the high quality display to help make this happen,” commented Zoli Kovacs, CEO, L!BER8.

Tim Burne, CEO, Plastic Logic, commented: “Forward-thinking businesses such as L!BER8 are taking advantage of the huge opportunities that glass-free displays offer in terms of product innovation and differentiation. We helped them to tackle a number of design concerns in a way that meant no compromises to their vision had to be made.”

The L!BER8 and Plastic Logic collaboration can be seen in action here, demonstrating how the bracelet looks and works.

Plastic Logic has also been involved in the development of other fashion-forward projects such as The Single Coat by Bianca Cheng Constanzo and Laura Hughes, where the displays’ flame animations on the coat pockets represent reference to the idiom ‘burning a hole in your pocket’. The designers have labelled the coat as a ‘synergy between conceptual design and the latest technology.’
