Google uses AI to help you find your perfect job

Transforming itself into an artificial intelligence and machine learning company, Google are now using these technologies to improve search results, translate languages, help you manage a bulging email inbox, and now find a job.

The latest use of machine learning has seen the search giant create a jobs search page – dubbed Google for Jobs. People using Google to search for new work opportunities will be able to enter the position and location they are looking for and be presented with a list of results.

Google has outlined and explained the new jobs engine in a blog post here, and has said the new feature has been designed for “helping both job seekers and employers”.

Where searches have a ‘clear intent’, Google will pull in job results and allow them to be clicked to show more details. Examples of searches made that have an ‘obvious purpose’ include ‘head of catering jobs in NYC’ and ‘entry level jobs in DC’.

Google said the function is rolling out in the US on the Google app, desktop and mobile web. It is planning to expand the feature to other countries later in the year but has not announced when.

Machine learning is being used within the system to sort search results and categorize the type of jobs. The jobs displayed in the search results will also be pulled from some of the biggest job sites on the internet: these include LinkedIn, Monster and Glassdoor. Companies that update their own sitemaps with structured data will also have their job postings automatically pulled in by Google.

Google first revealed its plans to use machine learning in job searches at its I/O 2017 developer’s conference. At the event, held in Mountain View, California, Pichai said Google wanted to use its machine learning tech to “have an immediate impact on people’s lives” and as a result would create Google for Jobs.

“I’m personally enthusiastic for this initiative because it addresses an important need and taps our core capabilities as a company, from searching and organizing information to AI and machine learning,” he said.
