Panasonic develops giant blimp-like drone for sporting events

For some time now, Panasonic has been providing high-resolution imaging via projectors and different cameras that help amplify different sporting and entertainment events. Now, it wants to take it a step further.

Panasonic is currently working on a prototype drone system called ballooncam, which is really a combination of a drone and giant balloon.  The company intends for ballooncam to be used for staging different sports and events.

Right now, balloncam is in the experimental phase as Panasonic tries to bring the camera to market.

How it works

Inside of the giant balloon is drone, whose thrust can be controlled by  the force of the propeller. The ballooncam can be equipped with a camera, LED, and a projector, so it can also light up and display a wide range of information.

Ballooncam is powered by four propellers, and can fly around event venues in sync with planned performances. It also uses the buoyancy of the large balloon and saves energy while in flight, so it can be used for long periods of time.

As an added bonus, since the drone is completely wrapped inside of the large balloon, it can fly close to and above the audience, allowing organizers to shoot dynamic aerial footage.

Panasonic envisions that the drone will be used for performances involving display images, different lighting techniques, or signage.

The prototype was showcased in the Panasonic booth at Content Tokyo 2016 this week. Watch the demo below.
