Renesas Introduces RA2T1 MCUs for Compact, Single-Motor Systems
Renesas Electronics has released its new RA2T1 group of microcontrollers (MCUs), designed to meet the needs of single-motor control applications such as fans, power tools, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, and similar devices. Based on the Arm® Cortex®-M23 core, the RA2T1 MCUs strike a balance between performance, compact size, and efficient motor control functionality.
Purpose-Built for Single-Motor Control
The RA2T1 integrates features specifically tailored for controlling Brushless DC (BLDC) motors in compact systems. A key highlight is its 3-channel sample-and-hold (S&H) analog front end, which enables simultaneous detection of 3-phase current values. This improves accuracy compared to traditional sequential sampling methods, which can introduce timing delays and reduce control precision.
In addition, the MCU offers a complementary PWM timer function that automates dead time insertion and generates asymmetric PWM signals—an essential feature for effective inverter control. These functions support more reliable and efficient drive algorithms in single-motor systems.
Built-In Safety Features
The RA2T1 includes several mechanisms to protect against overcurrent and ensure safe motor operation. A Port Output Enable function and high-speed comparator allow rapid shutdown of the PWM output when an overcurrent event is detected. Developers can also configure the shutdown behavior to match specific inverter requirements.
Additional safety functions include SRAM parity error checking, ADC self-diagnostics, illegal memory access detection, and clock accuracy monitoring—all important for applications requiring robust protection and compliance.

Development Support and Ecosystem
The RA2T1 series is supported by Renesas’ Flexible Software Package (FSP), which includes middleware, peripheral drivers, real-time operating system (RTOS) options, and example projects. The FSP framework helps reduce development time and makes it easier to scale or migrate designs across the broader RA family of MCUs.
Use Cases and System Integration
The RA2T1 MCUs are well suited for embedded motor control in space- and power-constrained applications. Renesas has validated system architectures combining the RA2T1 with other components—such as power management ICs, sensors, and wireless modules—for applications like smart ceiling fans, cordless tools, and portable vacuum cleaners. These pre-tested combinations can help accelerate prototyping and reduce integration risks.
