Samsung—Replicating Human Vision With AI in Camera Sensors

Samsung has big AI plans.

They plan to incorporate a dedicated AI chip directly into its camera sensors. According to Business Korea, Samsung will incorporate AI into its camera image sensors while creating sensors that can sense and replicate human senses.

Samsung’s internal name for the effort is “Humanoid Sensors.” They estimate a 2027 release. Samsung’s 200-megapixel ISOCELL camera sensor with “ZOOM Anyplace” technology uses AI for automatic object tracking during close-up shots. South Korean SK Hynix also unveiled its camera sensor with an integrated AI processing chip during its Tech Summit in 2023.

AI camera sensors use an integrated chip with AI capabilities to process data directly at the sensor level. Incorporating AI into imaging sensors should improve image quality, lower latency and power consumption, and possibly result in better face and object recognition capabilities.

The company is also bringing AI tools to its Galaxy series smartphone. This would likely include a tool to generate wallpaper using combinations of keywords, the ability to relocate objects in an image using AI, and a feature to let users expand a picture beyond its actual borders. Samsung Notes app will likely be able to auto-format large paragraphs and generate summaries for them when prompted.
