LED Navigation Goggles Help Keep Swimmers On Course In Open Waters

There are still a few weeks left of summer, so it’s acceptable to talk about summer tech. Although, for swimmers who swim year-round, navigation goggles are in high demand.

When swimmers hit the open waters during a swimming competition, one void of traditional swimming lanes, they often find themselves zig-zagging through the water, and as a result, wasting energy that is needed to complete the course.

OnCourse Goggles were designed to solve this problem by creating virtual swimming lanes.

The goggles look like ordinary goggles, but are really embedded with high-precision an electronic compass, accelerometer with tilt compensation, microprocessor, rechargeable battery and customized software.

The patent pending goggles have a point-and-click design that allows the swimmer  to store a heading with a single button press. The goggles can provide real-time feedback during a swim via a  small LED array in each eyepiece. The OnCourse Goggles analyze the direction a person is swimming and if you happen to go of course, the LEDs notify you of what direction you should be swimming in. It also takes into account water currents and wind changes.

There’s currently a Kickstarter campaign going for OnCourse Goggles. The creators hope to raise $60,000 to begin manufacturing. If you’re interested in ordering a pair, they’re available for pre-order for $149.00.
