Eaton Enhances IE4 Compatible Variable Speed Drives

Eaton has enhanced its range of robust and compact PowerXL DC1 variable speed drives with the addition of torque and motor-speed control functions that enable machine and system builders to access applications involving extreme load fluctuations.

The new generation of PowerXL DC1 variable speed drives support all types of highly efficient IE4 motors, including permanent magnet, brushless DC and synchronous reluctance versions.

As with previous models, the latest PowerXL variable speed drives are easy-to-use and require only basic motor tuning. In addition to the existing Variable Frequency (V/f) control mode, extra torque can be made available in a lower speed range, if required, via a new Sensor-Less Vector control (SLV) feature that provides for a high level of motor-speed stability.

A number of other functions have been added to the PowerXL DC1 range that enable machine and system builders to use them in a wider range of applications. For example, they enable a second acceleration or deceleration ramp to be set for pump applications, whereby the drive switches to these functions once a certain frequency is reached. In addition, a new AC flux braking feature provides for more effective braking performance without the need for a braking resistor.

Over 30 new monitoring parameters have been added to the latest PowerXL DC1 variable speed drives, enabling users to capture more status information and improve system diagnostics. These include a kWh display that allows the drive’s power consumption to be determined. Users can also measure variables such as the operating hours of the fan, the internal temperature or fault counter for overcurrent, under/overvoltage and over temperature.

As with previous models, the latest PowerXL DC1 variable speed drives are quick and easy to commission. For more complex applications, additional parameters can be saved and transferred to other devices; making the drives particularly well-suited to duplicate applications. They are also extremely sturdy. Additional circuit protection shields the electronics from moisture, dust, chemicals and extreme temperatures. This increases reliability and prolongs the service life of the drive.

The new variable speed drives are 100% backwards-compatible with the previous generation. As such, they can be retrofitted easily into existing applications with no changes to the enclosure or fixing dimensions required. Any existing accessories such as motor chokes, I/O expansion modules or SmartWire-DT modules can continue to be used. Only new versions of the memory stick and the external operating unit are required.

PowerXL DC1 variable speed drives are available in four sizes with IP20 protection in the power range up to 22kW. For IP66 protection rating, three sizes are offered in the power range up to 7.5kW. In addition to the standard ModbusRTU and CANopen interfaces, the entire product range can connect to Eaton’s SmartWire-DT intelligent connection system as an additional option.

The new devices are also integrated into Eaton’s extensive range of energy-efficient solutions for motors. The PowerXL Selection Aid can be used to quickly and easily select the drive required for the relevant application. The online configuration tool shows the corresponding item number, including the associated switchgear and protective elements, chokes and filters.
