Automotive and industrial networks are becoming increasingly dependent on Ethernet as systems shift toward centralized computing architectures and higher levels of connectivity. Software-defined vehicles, industrial automation platforms, robotics systems, and distributed sensing networks all require communication links capable of moving larger amounts of data while maintaining reliability and predictable behavior.
As these networks grow in complexity, designers are also balancing additional requirements around cybersecurity, functional safety, and scalability.
Microchip Technology recently introduced the LAN878x and LAN888x families of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) PHY transceivers, targeting applications that require secure and deterministic communication in automotive and industrial environments.
Single Pair Ethernet technology has gained attention because it allows Ethernet communication over a single twisted-pair cable rather than the multiple wire pairs used in traditional Ethernet implementations. Reducing cabling complexity can lower system weight, simplify installation, and help support distributed architectures in vehicles and industrial systems.
The new device families support 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, and dual-speed 100/1000BASE-T1 operation, providing designers with multiple bandwidth options depending on application requirements.
One notable feature is the integration of hardware-based MACsec security. Defined by the IEEE 802.1AE standard, MACsec provides protection directly at the Ethernet frame level through encryption and authentication mechanisms. Integrating security within the physical networking hardware can reduce processor overhead and avoid adding software layers that may introduce latency or increase design complexity.
Network security has become increasingly important as vehicles and industrial systems continue to adopt connected architectures. Ethernet links that once existed primarily inside isolated systems are now frequently connected to broader networks, creating additional attack surfaces that designers must address.
The PHY families also incorporate support for Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), a collection of Ethernet standards intended to enable deterministic communication. Unlike conventional Ethernet traffic that may experience variable transmission timing, TSN mechanisms can provide more predictable behavior by controlling latency and prioritizing time-critical traffic.
Deterministic communication can be particularly important in applications such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), zonal vehicle architectures, robotic control systems, and industrial automation networks where delayed or inconsistent data delivery can affect system operation.
Functional safety is another area receiving increased attention as vehicles and industrial equipment become more software-driven. The LAN878x and LAN888x families include diagnostic and link-monitoring capabilities intended to support system designs targeting ISO 26262 ASIL-B requirements.
The families also include pin-compatible device options across both 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 variants. Maintaining compatibility across bandwidth options allows developers to reuse hardware designs while scaling network capabilities for future platforms.
The LAN878x family includes LAN8781, LAN8781M, LAN8782, and LAN8782M devices, while the LAN888x family expands support with multiple configurations including the LAN8881 through LAN8884 series. Devices carrying the “M” suffix incorporate MACsec functionality.
Beyond automotive systems, the transceivers are also intended for industrial automation, robotics, avionics, and other environments where deterministic communication and robust networking behavior are increasingly becoming system requirements.
As Ethernet continues to replace traditional in-vehicle and industrial communication methods, PHY-level integration of security, timing control, and safety functions may help simplify system architectures while supporting the growing performance demands of connected systems.
