Tark Thermal Solutions Invests $5.5 Million to Expand Thermoelectric Manufacturing in North Carolina

As data centers, optical networks and advanced electronics become more powerful, managing heat is becoming a bigger part of system design. Components packed into smaller spaces generate more heat, and temperature-sensitive devices need increasingly precise cooling to maintain performance.

Tark Thermal Solutions (TTS) is expanding its U.S. manufacturing and engineering operations to address that demand, investing $5.5 million in a new facility in Durham, North Carolina.

The site will serve as the company’s Global Thermoelectric Technology Center and more than double its U.S. production space for thermoelectric components.

Construction is expected to finish in January 2027, with operations moving to the new location shortly afterward.

More Capacity for Thermoelectric Cooling

Thermoelectric coolers use an electrical current to transfer heat from one side of a device to the other, providing precise temperature control without moving parts.

They are particularly useful in optical transceivers, where temperature changes affect laser performance and wavelength stability. As data networks move toward higher speeds and greater bandwidth, managing heat in these compact optical systems becomes increasingly important.

TTS also supplies thermal management technology for medical equipment, life sciences instruments, analytical systems and advanced sensors, including those used in autonomous vehicles.

The Durham expansion will give the company additional space to manufacture thermoelectric components and develop cooling solutions for these applications.

The facility will include controlled-environment rooms for highly automated semiconductor manufacturing processes, along with expanded prototyping and testing capabilities.

By bringing manufacturing, engineering and testing into a larger operation, TTS aims to support customer projects from initial design and validation through full-scale production.

Supporting Higher-Density Electronics

The investment comes as TTS customers face increasing power densities and more demanding thermal requirements.

In data centers and telecommunications equipment, for example, higher-performance optical components must operate within tight temperature limits even as systems become more compact.

The new technology center will provide additional engineering and laboratory space for developing and validating thermal management solutions before they enter production.

According to Matthew Veety, general manager at TTS, the facility’s layout is being designed around manufacturing workflows to improve production capacity and efficiency.

The building will also feature higher-efficiency electrical infrastructure and modernized climate control. TTS expects the improvements to reduce utility costs, freeing up capital for further investment in its operations.

Expanding Near Research Triangle Park

TTS will remain in the Durham area, with the new facility located near Research Triangle Park.

The location keeps the company close to regional engineering talent, suppliers and research institutions while providing additional room for production, research and development, laboratories and offices.

Commercial real estate firm JLL advised TTS on the transaction and facilitated the lease.

The expansion will support customer programs in North America and Europe, particularly as new applications move from engineering prototypes into higher-volume manufacturing.

For TTS, the additional production space is only part of the investment. The larger engineering and testing operation will also allow the company to develop and validate thermoelectric cooling solutions as customers introduce more complex, higher-power electronic systems.
