TDK Shrinks Y1 Safety Capacitors for High-Voltage Power Designs

As power electronics move toward higher operating voltages, engineers need EMI suppression components that meet safety requirements without taking up excessive board space. Temperature and humidity resistance are also important, particularly in EV charging equipment, industrial drives and renewable energy systems.

TDK has introduced its B3201*A5/B5/C5 series of compact Y1 safety capacitors for line-to-ground EMI suppression. The metallized polypropylene (MKP) film capacitors are rated for continuous operation at 500 V AC or 1,500 V DC at temperatures up to 110°C, with operation at reduced voltage supported up to 125°C.

The series covers capacitance values from 0.47 to 33 nF, with lead spacings of 15 mm and 22.5 mm. The smaller B32012 versions start at 5.0 × 10.5 × 18.0 mm, while the B32013 versions extend the capacitance range to 33 nF. Both use through-hole mounting with parallel wire leads.

Y-class capacitors are used between line and ground in EMI filters, where component failure could create an electrical safety hazard. TDK’s new devices meet Y1 safety requirements under IEC/EN/UL 60384-14 and related standards. The series is also AEC-Q200 Rev. E compliant for automotive applications.

For equipment exposed to heat and moisture, TDK specifies temperature-humidity-bias testing at 85°C, 85% relative humidity and 500 V AC for 500 hours. The capacitors use a self-healing MKP construction, with plastic housings and epoxy sealing that meet UL 94 V-0 flammability requirements.

Engineers working near the upper temperature limit will need to account for derating. Above 110°C, the allowable operating voltage decreases by 1.5% per degree Celsius, and operation between 110°C and 125°C is limited to 1,000 hours.

The series is intended for applications including EV on-board chargers, charging infrastructure, industrial frequency converters, server power supplies, solar inverters and energy storage systems. The compact packages provide another option for designers balancing EMI filtering, safety certification and limited PCB space.
